Buxton Swimmers at Midland Region Championships



As both swimmers and parents patience wears increasingly thin with the Council due to the continued delays with the Buxton Swimming Pool refurbishment, its closure now into its 10th month, 5 Buxton swimmers have amazingly still managed to qualify and jcompete at the Midland Region Swimming Championships in Coventry.

Helen Thornhill, Abbie Wood, Emma Longden, Lucy Wood and Emily Allsopp all competed in the Championships in May and June. Helen Thornhill competed in the 10 years age group 100 and 200 metres backstoke finishing in a superb 9th and 18th places. Helen showed some great potential at the meet. Emma Longden competed in the 100 metre Freestyle and 100 metres butterfly in which she finished in an excellent 14th place with a personal best time. Senior Coach Mike Glossop is predicting a lot more success for both Helen and Emma once normal training hopefully resumes at Buxton in September

Abbie Wood won 2 silver medals in the 100 and 200 metre breaststroke. Abbie finished in 7th place in the 400 metres individual Medley. Lucy Wood won a gold medal in the 100 metre backstroke and a bronze in the 200 metre backstroke. Lucy finished in 4th place overall for 13 years girls Lucy also won a gold medal with the Derventio eXcel swim squad relay team.

Emily Allsopp competing in the Youth Championships in May won 3 individual silver medals in the 50, 100 and 200 metre backstroke events. Emily also won a silver and 2 bronze medals with the Derventio eXcel swim squad relay team.
